Miss Slik's Review of Childsplay's Birthday Banger Featuring Nobyus

As I mentioned in yesterday's post Adventures in Dating Douchebags: Meet Pusha C the Man Who Needs a Shirt this week is a Double Post Week so I can get into my fun from last weekend! So last Saturday night, which would have been April 11th, I went to Childsplay's Birthday Banger featuring NobyuS at The Greene Turtle in Leesburg. Now, in case ya'll don't know, DJ Childsplay is a DJ (obviously) based out of Northern Virginia who has been spinning in the DMV for the last 12 years. NobyuS is a Hip Hop duo also based out of Northern Virginia comprised of Lyrion Neeley aka Mastrr Jeppett'o and Kenny Wilson aka JusW8

I've actually known NobyuS  for several years now because they are part of my karaoke fam and I've been a supporter of their music since the beginning. I got the Facebook invite for the party from by boy Kenny and figured I'd go to support him and Lyrion because I'm all about showing love to my peoples, especially these 2 guys because they've always shown mad love and supported me in what I do.

When I looked at the invite I noticed that my pretend boyfriend Juddy was going to so I hit him up and made sure that was definite. He was debating between going to the hip hop party and something in Baltimore so I told him "Just remember that Baltimore sucks and I'll be mad at you if you don't go with me." (I didn't really mean Bmore sucks so don't get mad my Bmore people. I was just saying that to get Juddy to go with me. I love B-Town. K-Swift is my Club Queen for life ♡).

I won out and he decided to go because I'm awesome and my threat worked.. Plus I'm cute and he's hoping since he's my pretend boyfriend he might get pretend laid...

He got Ricardo and their boy Hazel to come too...

Like 10 minutes after we got there, Juddy decided to get on the decks. He was great and I've never seen him play Hip Hop before...

I laughed when he got off and was like "And you weren't even going to come.. Look at you just randomly getting up the decks and shit."

Now I'll admit I was not like a super fan before last Saturday night of DJ Childsplay... I am now. But I wasn't then.. So I'm going to break it down in an honest way and hope he takes what I'm about to say in the spirit in which it is intended because I think he's a cool dude. I'd only heard him play one of time when he spun at Transit a few weeks prior to that for the warmup to Funky Fresh.

He played Drum and Bass and it wasn't a bad set... It was just A LOT.. Like he definitely banged it the fuck out and every track was a hardcore banger so loud the walls were banging. All I could think of was that episode of Parks & Rec when Tom Haverford DJ's the prom and he's like "Every song in my iPod is a banger. I have a 32 point scale of what determines a banger." Turns out bangers are his thing so I wasn't far off.

Like I said though, it wasn't a bad set and the youngins there were definitely feelin it. But the older folks like me were enjoying it from outside of the bar where we could still hear it very clearly but at a volume level that worked for us. Since I'm all about constructive criticism, I would just say he needs to watch the volume levels and let it breathe a little more. Also, and this goes for every DJ, you have to read your crowd and adjust what you play to fit the audience and the venue.

Spinning DnB sets to me is like fucking... You can't just get it in and bang it out like a jackrabbit in the same position for an hour. There needs to be some foreplay to warm it up and get it wet. Then you gotta ease it in gently then get harder as you go along.. You also need to make sure you switch positions every so often to keep it interesting... and since you can't necessarily keep up the same pace the whole time, some of those positions will be the lazy 'lay on your stomach or side while I do you a little more gently' switch ups so you can breathe for a sec before getting back into the hardcore parts. During the whole thing though you should be teasing your crowd and making them beg you for more. Talk dirty to them. Tell them they are naughty bitches. Play with them.. cause they like that shit.

Anyway, that being said, my opinion of DJ Childsplay definitely changed when I saw him play last Saturday night for his birthday party. He spun hip hop that night and it was dope. You can definitely tell that is his wheelhouse... which when I thought about it actually gave me an entirely new perspective on his set at Transit. This dude is doing what I, along with many other DJ's who are smart have done... He's diversifying.

I have mad respect for DJ's who do that. Too many DJ's, particularly EDM DJ's.. especially DnB DJ's, think playing styles like Top 40 is beneath them... which is bullshit. Bear in mind, the kind of DJ's who hate on playing other styles are the same cats who plan their entire sets from start to finish and play boring, monotonous crap that drones on and doesn't cater to a crowd.. Because they don't care about their audience. They only care about playing the music they think the people want to hear... and then look up and wonder why nobody is dancing.

I love playing Top 40. I started out as a DnB DJ and played places for years where I was lucky if I got my bar tabs covered. There was even one party I played at several years ago where I actually had to pay a cover charge to get in the door.. Yeah, I had to pay just to be at the party I was on the lineup for or I would not have gotten in. However, I started playing Top 40 thanks to receiving the same helpful advice I'm giving you now from my boy Quincy of Uncle Jesse who plays everything from Moombahton and DnB for ravers at massives to Top 40 for posh, fancy people at bottle service clubs. Once I started following his advice it finally gave me an asking price because Top 40 DJ's get paid. It also made me a better DJ in countless ways.

If you're a DJ who only plays one style then you should take this helpful bit of advice and learn how to play other kinds of music. It allows you to get more bookings at various shows, expands your fan base, and actually makes you a better DJ because you'll learn that different styles of music get played differently. You don't spin House the same way you spin Drum and Bass and you don't spin EDM the same way you play Top 40 or Hip Hop.

If that confuses you then I'll clarify... So we've already established that spinning DnB is like sex. Well, when you spin most kinds of House or Trance you make your transitions smoother so it flows versus broken beat styles where you can chop it up a bit more. When it comes to playing Top 40 or Hip Hop though, you do more cutting and chopping on your transitions. Since a lot of Top 40 and Hip Hop songs are shorter and don't necessarily match as easily beatwise, you're also not going to go for longer mixes because you're cutting over on the meaty part of the song and only playing each track for like a minute or 2... versus EDM where the songs are longer and you can demonstrate your beat matching skills.

But the great thing about playing a multitude of music genres is you'll learn all these things.. It does take some time and getting used to though. I'm still training myself to stop playing Hip Hop like a DnB DJ... Kinda get the sense now that DJ Childsplay may be doing the reverse and training himself to not play DnB like a Hip Hop DJ on a live Friday night where you drop banger after banger after banger.

When he plays Hip Hop though, he's got all that shit down. His set was hard at the right times with breather tracks sprinkled in. He also played one of my 3 super fave jammies.. The Lil Jon "Bend Ova" Yoga Ball joint... Hold up.. In case you don't know...

My other 2 super fave jammies are "Bubble Butt" by Major Lazer and "Express Yourself" by Diplo. Any DJ who plays one of these tracks endears himself to me... A DJ who throws down all 3 is my hero and I'm just going home at that point because as far as I'm concerned the party is over and I've heard all I need to hear. However, of those 3 though, Bend Ova is definitely my #1 so DJ Childsplay got massive bonus points in my book for that.

The party itself was an interesting format and totally different from other NobyuS performances. Usually when I've seen them play, it's been at bigger spots on various size stages. This was way more intimate... Smaller place with just a folding table and the floor in front of it with tables and chairs around... like NobyuS Unplugged.

Here is the crowd...

Here are NobyuS with DJ Childsplay in the background...

So, since it was Childsplay's birthday party he picked the songs and order on the fly. He'd drop a beat and they'd go in. Some of the songs were older ones they hadn't done in awhile so it would take them a sec.. But then they'd rock it out. It was kinda like skaraoke but with your own music instead of any random song. Very few artists ever do shows like that so it's pretty interesting when it happens.

I was happy they did my favorite NobyuS joint "OH NO!" I even got a video of it...

Thats me.. in the background.. Trying to sing along and dance.. But not move too much.

After they got done, DJ Childsplay's regular MC Big B actually got on the mic. I had to stop in my tracks because this dude was pretty sick. Not sure where he came from but he definitely has some dope microphone skills.

Then there was also some birthday shennagans and group shots outside which were hysterical. I took these pics while balancing on a rocking chair in 5 inch heels and did not fall and/or bust my ass while getting on or off said rocking chair.. That my friends is called "skills".

All in all, I have to say that this was a dope night and good times for sure. Everybody killed it and The Greene Turtle in Leesburg is now still a crime scene. I've seen NobyuS perform with a few DJ's and DJ Childsplay was my favorite one by far. He got them on the hype man backup exactly in the right spots and really added to the show. I told Kenny and Lyrion they should have him be their regular DJ from henceforth because they definitely make a good team. So I'm definitely hoping to see more performances like the one last Saturday in the future.

I also have to add that I support these guys not just because they're my karaoke fam.. But because I'm a huge NobyuS fan. Every time I've been to one of their shows it's always a dope ass fun party. I think all their stuff is quality and unique. It's intelligent but not so deep it loses people. They also definitely know how to make a good party rocker that gets everybody up dancing... All of this is why I highly recommend checking them out. I definitely know that Juddy, Ricardo, and Hazel are fans now so I guarantee you'll probably become a fan too.

And like I said, I'm definitely now a big fan of DJ Childsplay. He's a down ass dude and we will actually both be playing on the inside stage at the 2nd installment of The Movement at Mahalo Cove in Sterling, VA on Friday, May 1st. So since I know ya'll are coming to see me cause you fucking love me, make sure you check out his set as well and show him some love.

In the meantime, if ya'll want to check out more from these guys and you've missed the fact that I've sprinkled mad hyperlinks throughout this shit then here they are one more time. This is DJ Childsplay's Facebook Page and this is  NobyuS' Facebook Page. You can also check out  DJ Childsplay's Soundcloud Profile and NobyuS' Soundcloud Profile. The guys of NobyuS are currently working on some brand spankin new tracks as we speak so as soon as they start dropping them I'll be sure to keep ya'll posted.

Twerked Out Tuesday Theme Songs: Time for Twerkathon OH-14!

So I've been gone for a minute... OK.. Maybe like 5 minutes.. dealing with some family stuff but now I'm back with the jump off... Cause ya know I had to kick off Twerkathon OH-14!

So first up... You know it! It's the 2 Chainz Song of the Day! I've been diggin on this song for a minute.. Not sure if I've included it in a previous blog.. but fuck it if I did cause it's hot enough to recycle. It's off the BOATS II: Me Time album and it's called Used 2...

Next up is a bonus 2 Chainz Song of the Day because I've neglected you for so long and I feel like you deserve it. This one is called Headbands by B.o.B featuring 2 Chainz...

Next up are some twerktorials. The first is a video my boy Hippie actually posted on my Facebook profile because he thought I would appreciate it.. I did. Now you can too. It's twerktorials choreography from the girls at the Fraules Dance Studio in Russia and definitely the best white girl twerk team videos I've seen...

I also found this from FraulesGirl aka Elena Ninja of her dancing alone after classes. Her fall into the split is pretty crucial...

More proof white girls can actually twerk...

Next up, some songs for you to practice in front of that mirror girrrrrrlllll....

Here is the song from the first video. It's called FM$ by New Boyz...

Here is the song from the 2nd instructional video. It's called Exercise Ya Body by Tropkillaz featuring JSTJR...

Next is new Kstylis off his mixtape he put out a few months ago called King of Twerk... I think was an answer to my call for new Kstylis twerk tracks since this blog is his biggest fan sooo You're Welcome!

This one is called Daisy Dukes Back featuring Drone Boyz....

This one is called Twerk Star... which you will hopefully be by now thanks to the twerktorials and the long break you've had to practice...

And finally... I've been going buck over this song lately. It's called FDB by Young Dro featuring the one and only 2 Chainz! So actually you get 3 2CSotD's!

Get it in and stay up!

Happy Twerked Out Tuesday Theme Songs!

Happy Tuesday My People! Pressed for time today so let's get in a quickie shall we?

First up, you know it! 2 CHAINZ Song of the Day! This is another one off the new album B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time. It's actually a bonus track called Employee of the Month...

Next, some twerking videos I think are awesome by the same chick whose video I showed in a post a few weeks ago Happy Throwdowns and Throwbacks Thoroughly Twerked Out Thursday Theme Songs! with the chick twerking at Walmart...

She's twerking at the library with subtitles...

And Disney World will NEVER be the same...

Next, I can't believe I'm about to say this... But I like this song. It's called 23 by your girl the Twerking Trainwreck herself, Miley Cyrus, featuring Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa...

OK, now to watch people who know what they're doing... I played this song several weeks ago when we first started Twerkathon OH-13 in my post Happy HumP Day Theme Songs: 2 CHAINZ, Twerkathon OH-13, and More Fresh DnB  but today I found the video for it...

Also found this song I'm diggin... Never heard a dude say he'd Yike in it.. But I'm pretty sure I can guess what it means...

If you're a fan of The Wobble then here is another song by V.I.C. that's pretty hot called Twerk It... Sort of reminds me of the original version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with the words running across the screen as the Oompa Loompas sang.... What do you get when you shake your booty? Hopefully you don't look wack like Miley... I don't like the look of it.

Practice in front of that mirror girl! BOOM!

Happy Tuesday Theme Songs: Brand Spankin NEW Stuff and Twerkathon OH-13 - Who is the REAL King of Twerk?

Happy Tuesday My People! LOTS to get into today so let's do this! I can barely contain myself because there is so much new stuff out today or about to come out over the next few weeks... That's right folks, it seems it's Fall release time!

First up... I'm freaking DYING right now because the new 2 CHAINZ album B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time which is set to be released officially on September 10th is being leaked bit by bit. That means we're about to get a rack of new 2 CHAINZ songs of the day!

So far you've heard 2 singles off the album, Netflix in yesterday's post Happy Monday Theme Songs: Super Fresh 2 CHAINZ, Twerkathon OH-13 - Twerking Trainwreck, and Wiz Khalifa! and Feds Watching in the post from a couple weeks ago that kicked this madness off Happy Monday Theme Songs From 2 Chainz!.

Here is another new one from the album that I'm feeling called Where U Been? featuring Cap 1...

Next up, don't act like you don't know it's time for today's installment of Twerkathon OH-13...

OK, so one of my proudest accomplishments recently was FINALLY learning how to make it clap. Here is the tutorial that I learned from because I think it's super helpful. What better way to learn how to clap your booty than from strippers since I'm pretty sure they invented that move? For real, you'll know you're doing it right because you will hear a clap sound.

Now let's get into something that I find super funny whilst we practice our new-found booty clapping skills... Who the F is the REAL "King of Twerk"?!?!?

Currently Diplo is out declaring himself as the King of Twerk. Between his outright productions and those under his Major Lazer project he's got all kinds of girls all around the world "expressing themselves" all over walls and furniture. He's also currently running a little instagram video submission contest where ladies are sending 15 second videos demonstrating their twerking skills.
(Ladies, before you get excited and make videos to start showing off your twerking skills that may be newly acquired due to this blog, bear in mind that if you do that then your bare booty will be on the internet for the entire world to see and hundreds of thousands of his followers to comment on. I've been reading the comments and some of them are pretty vicious.)

However, the number of actual twerking songs he's produced is quite lacking and the ones that exist are super hard to find... Believe me, I had to do some digging just to find this one for today. It's a track off the Kick Ass 2 movie soundtrack and it's called Earthquake. He co-produced it with DJ Fresh.. Real quick by the way, LOVE DJ FRESH! LOVE HIM LIKE IT'S MY FREAKING JOB! HAVE LOVED HIM SINCE BUZZ DAYS! VIRAM FOREVER!)

Anyway, between Earthquake, Express Yourself, like 2 others I can't find on YouTube, and some Major Lazer joints, which bear in mind are co-produced so Twerk King credit must be shared, the number of actual twerking tracks is pretty limited. He's pretty much coasting on current fan volume. So does this qualify him?

Fans can be fickle and their attention spans are short. If you don't continue to stay relevant enough then they're gone like the wind... and lemmetellyasomething, Diplo is 34 years old. Do you know how hard it is to be in your 30's and stay relevant to teenagers and people in their early 20's? Basically, I think if another newer, hotter, younger guy comes along and puts out a better song girls like "expressing themselves" to more then, unfortunately, it's Bye Bye Diplo. (Sidenote: When that happens, because it WILL happen, I would like to see a 2 stage twerk-off.. Kind of like Scott Pilgrim when the gorilla comes out and kills the dragon. Make it happen. Make it happen now.)

Now, there is another man out there who identifies himself as the King of Twerk and his name is K-Stylis. This man has a rack of twerk songs that call out specific booty bouncing instructions like it's a stripper square dance. I dare you. I triple.. NO.. I quadruple dog dare you to keep up with how fast he calls them out. Best Workout EVER!

So K-Stylis has the volume and if you search him on YouTube he definitely has the following too. The only problem with his claim though is that he is still lost in obscurity and has not put out anything new in about a year. I personally have become all about some K-Stylis so somebody please let that man know he needs to put out a new album. I will take it to the streets and promote it myself because that's how much I want that to happen. Maybe he and Diplo need to team up on something. (If that actually happens then somebody owes me a rack of money for suggesting it.)

However, I was always under the impression that the real Kings of Twerk were the Ying Yang Twins. By sheer volume and following they definitely had that crown for years...

Unfortunately though, they haven't put anything new out in awhile either... So alas, they lost their crown.

For me though, there is only one man I believe is the real King of Twerk. He's got the volume. He's got the following. And for real, I don't give a crap how old he is, he will ALWAYS be relevant... So relevant he still comes out with new stuff that just stays hot. This is hotness which has spanned 3 decades. That man's name is Mannie Fresh.

Rumor has it that he has reconciled with Birdman and they are supposed to be getting back into the studio. Puhhhhleeeeeezzzzz let this rumor be true! Before I die, I just want Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, Birdman, and Lil Wayne to do a Cash Money Millionaires Hot Boyz Reunion.

That's not just good ish right there... That is the BEST ish right there. If you don't know, act like you know because you should.

Next, I promised you some more brand spankin NEW stuff so here goes... Thanks to the all-knowing 2 CHAINZ on Twitter, I found out that 3 albums dropped today: 1) Big Sean's Hall of Fame, 2) Juicy J's Stay Trippy, and 3) Goodie Mob's Age Against the Machine. Big day for hip hop for real...

So first, Big Sean's Hall of Fame... Hated it! Well, not entirely... I just couldn't really get down to the songs I listened to because Big Sean basically gets out-rapped on every track I heard including this one featuring Juicy J and Nicki Minaj. Frankly Nicki Minaj is a beast and dudes who aren't Lil Wayne, 2 CHAINZ, and Drake need to either step up their game or stop letting her be on their tracks because she shuts them down. Get 'em gurrrrrlllll...

Next is Juicy J's Stay Trippy... Hated it! Yeah, I mean that one... which is sad because I freaking love me some Academy Award Winning Three Six Mafia like you don't even know. It's basically a collection of boring, tired stripper anthems that took WAY too long to release as an entire album. And when I say stripper anthems, I mean every song I've heard off this album is about strippers, strippers, strip clubs, and more strippers. Maybe the album took a year to release because Juicy J was too busy making it rain.

The first single Bandz A Make Her Dance was released nearly a year ago on 9/11/2012. Seriously, I can't stand this song...

Also, Bounce It featuring the DMV's own Wale and the R. Kelly of our generation, Trey Songz, sounds exactly like Bandz which makes it boring...

And he gets out-rapped by A$ap Rocky on Scholarship... which also sounds way too similar to the other songs...

Finally, Goodie Mob has reunited after 14 years and released Age Against the Machine... All I can say is, who the F doesn't like Goodie Mob?!?! Cee-Lo is bananas dude. This song called Special Education featuring Janelle Monae is the jam and it has such a positive message. It's on the same page that I've been preaching from about how you should celebrate being a unique individual and not dim your shine for anybody and be "normal" just to gain acceptance.

Just be happy and do you... BOOM!

Happy Thursday Theme Songs YAY!

It's Friday Eve Folks! Just one more day and we are home free 2 whole days before we start this endless worker bee rat race cycle all over again. Anyway, if you're already gearing up for your weekend then I got you...

First up is, of course, the 2 CHAINZ song of the day! This one is dedicated to my next installment of More Adventures in Dating the Douchebags of PoF coming up later...

Next, you know we have to keep Twerkathon OH-13 going... I've been getting an awesome response to this little segment and some readers have offered up suggestions that just might take this thing to a whole nother level.

The past couple days we've been delving into some instructional videos for the twerk-challenged or what I'm dubbing "Booty Bounce Beginners". Here are some more songs for you to practice your new found shaking skills. These have some instructions...

Huey's Pop, Lock, and Drop It shows you have twerking can be coordinated into an actual dance everyone can do...

Also, I'm sure you've heard this one from French Montana on the radio recently...

But, today I'd like to focus on a serious issue that plagues many a twerking veteran... Ass Shaking Addiction. Here is a cautionary tale about 2 young girls named Chuchi and Beba...

For those of you out there who are all too familiar with this affliction, it's OK. We will get through this together. I'm forming a support group called Twerkaholics Anonymous.

Hello, my name is Niki Slik and I am a jiggle junkie. I can't stop twerking. I'm actually doing it right now. So turn off that Taylor Swift crap and turn up that Sissy Nobby!

Now for those of you who are like, "That's cool but where's the DnB at?!" I've got something for you too... It's all about some Chase and Status today. Here are some of my faves...

Hello and welcome to Music Club!

Also Smash TV with the Guns n Roses Welcome to the Jungle sample... Just FYI BTW, this song makes an awesome alarm...

and finally a song I heard yesterday on Slacker that I'm really diggin called End Credits...

BOOM!

Happy HumP Day Theme Songs: 2 CHAINZ, Twerkathon OH-13, and More Fresh DnB

Happy HumP Day My People! We have managed to survive half the week so YaY for us! Here are your theme songs for the day...

First up is the 2CHAINZ Song of the Day... This song is called G.O.O.D. Morning and I just happened to stumble across it this morning. For those of you who don't understand my massive LOVE for 2 CHAINZ, songs like this are why. It makes you pull your hair and mush your face and go OH MAH GOD this is SOOOOOOOO G.O.O.D.!!!!

Next up is today's installment of Twerkation OH-13...

Just in case yesterday's instructional video wasn't enough for you, I found this one for those of you who are severely twerked challenged. Be forewarned though that this C-Jeezy dude is a bit of a hot mess and his instructional methods are slightly avant-garde. I'm pretty sure the guy in this is the same one crying to "Leave Brittney alone!" right after Ms. Spears' Blackout album was released and her trainwreck performance at the MTV VMA's of Gimme More.

Anyway, this is considered "advanced twerking" so you can learn the professional ish. Just don't forget to eat some ramen noodles and pretzel dips to get your booty right, put on a pair of pajama pants.. and above all DO NOT FORGET YO DRANK!

I do agree on finding a twerking song with instructions so here is the one C-Jeezy used in the video. Put this one while you practice in front of that mirror guuuurrrrrrlll! It's called Twerk by a chick named Lady and it's actually a pretty hot song.

And for those of you who want to get into crazy advanced twerking, I suggest watching Nicki Minaj. She was rated by Fuse as the #1 celebrity twerker. This song by Nicki Minaj and Ciara is for the ladies...

Now as promised, let's get into some fresh DnB that I found just for you...

This one is so brand spankin' new it's technically not even out yet apparently and you can only preorder it. It's Koncept's - Breathe In and it got posted to the Viper Recordings Sound Cloud Profile 6 days ago and YouTube today. I <3 it which is saying a lot.

Also, I found this Maduk Remix of Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis that is pretty decent. It definitely makes that song relevant again... which is good if you like the original and bad if you hated it. I personally started out liking it and then began hating it as it got overplayed.

Finally, this track is kinda liquidy but definitely catchy. I'll probably have it stuck in my head now for the rest of the day. It's Control by Matrix & Futurebound featuring Max Marshall...

BOOM!
